Jeff Clough - Rants

Computer Abuse

I hate computers, but that doesn't stop me from using them. Here are some things I've written about my twisted, mutually-abusive relationship with technology.

My Setup

For those of you playing along at home, I wrote up an inventory of the devices and software I'm presently subjecting myself to. I'll keep this updated as long as my will remains.

Why I Use Linux

I wrote this because I wanted a URL to point people at when they asked me why I used the Linux operating system and avoided proprietary software in general. Advocacy? Cautionary tale? Something in between?

Why I Use Emacs

Today, I use GNU Emacs for absolutely everything I possibly can. Writing code, organizing my to-do lists, keeping track of appointments, even reading and sending email. This might sound absurd, and that's because it is. I wrote this to explain myself.

Windows -> Linux Fight

A heartfelt rant about the process of replacing Windows 10 Professional with Ubuntu 24.04 on a Dell XPS 17 9710, and how the average user just coming to Linux is probably boned if they try to do that themselves.

The Great Wordpress Purge

A rant I wrote about the state of Wordpress in 2024, and content management systems in general. If you want to know why I abuse myself by writing HTML by hand instead of using a modern blogging platform, this is your answer.

Personal Stories

These are random tales from my personal life which don't fit neatly into any other category. I try to be as honest in these stories as my ethics allow (not everything is mine to tell), but beyond that I promise nothing.

Bad Brain, Bad!

I almost died from a subarachnoid hemorrhage in September of 2024. This is what I have to say about that.
